A HIGHLY SKILLED,
WORLD-CLASS WORKFORCE IS VITAL TO AUSTRALIA’S FUTURE

SKILLS & TRAINING. FACTS & FIGURES

For many years the mining industry has been a major contributor to Australia’s higher education sector. Since 1999, the industry has provided $50 million to support the continued teaching of mining related tertiary courses and has enabled 4,500 graduates to achieve their goals. Altogether, we partner with 17 universities across Australia to offer a range of specialist courses including mining engineering, metallurgy and minerals geoscience. No wonder mining is such a significant employer of scientists, engineers and physicists.3

The mining industry spends nearly $3 billion on R&D annually, or nearly $1 in $6 of all business R&D spending in Australia. This massive ongoing investment has resulted in our industry developing more than 6,500 original inventions and patents so far and is one of the key factors that enables the Australian mining industry to set the worldwide benchmark when it comes to innovation, commitment to new technologies and groundbreaking thinking.
